Half of all lamps are now recycled

HALF OF all the light sources used in the UK are now recycled – and the industry has hit a record 300 million recycled lamps and luminaires since waste regulations were introduced in 2007.

‘Our members can be very proud that they have helped to achieve this 300 million milestone,’ Recolight chief Nigel Harvey told Lux. ‘It’s they who have made it possible and it’s a testament to their dedication to improve lighting recycling in the UK.’

The major milestone represents enough waste to fill London’s Royal Albert Hall ten times over.

Recolight, the UK’s lighting WEEE compliance scheme, revealed the number today and said it included LED lamps as well as traditional fluorescent and halogen sources.

The organisation says its nationwide network of 3,000 collection points for consumer and business waste light sources has helped increase the UK’s lamp recycling rate – up from 40 per cent in 2012 to 48.5 per cent in 2017.

‘Our members can be very proud that they have helped to achieve this 300 million milestone,’ Recolight chief Nigel Harvey told Lux. ‘It’s they who have made it possible and it’s a testament to their dedication to improve lighting recycling in the UK.’

Recolight has now extended its recycling service to collect more waste electrical equipment covered by the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment regulations.

Suzanne Castine, marketing manager at Recolight added, ‘Feedback from our collection partners told us they wanted more. The success of our lamp and luminaire service over the years has made this possible.’
