Child injured as 20m luminaire falls into swimming pool

The linear light unit, one of four illuminating the perimeter of the pool at Southbury Leisure Centre in Enfield, London, plunged down during a family swimming session at the facility.

A 20-METRE long luminaire has fallen into a local authority swimming pool, injuring a child.

The pool at Southbury Leisure Centre was closed temporarily while the debris was cleared and a risk assessment carried out and it has now been re-opened.

The linear light unit, one of four illuminating the perimeter of the pool at Southbury Leisure Centre in Enfield, London, plunged down during a family swimming session at the facility.

The child, one of 20 members of the leisure centre in the pool at the time, was hit on the head.

It’s believed that the lighting assembly was not energised when it hit the water.

London Ambulance Service, who treated the injured youngster at the scene, told the press:

‘We were called at 2:14pm on Sunday October 27th to reports of a child injured on Southbury Road, Enfield.

‘We dispatched an ambulance crew, a medic in a car and an incident response officer to the scene.

The first of our medics arrived in under four minutes.

‘We treated a child at the scene for a head injury and took them to a hospital.’

The pool was closed temporarily while the debris was cleared and a risk assessment carried out and it has now been re-opened.

A investigation has been launched by the operator of the centre, Fusion Lifestyle.

It said its initial inquiries indicated that someone at the centre ‘threw an item’ at the ceiling which may have caused the incident.

Pool-goer Ed Sima told the local newspaper, the Enfield Independent, that he thought a 'bomb had gone off’ when the lighting unit collapsed such was the noise of the crashing lighting unit.

He said: ‘The whole lighting unit which was 20 metres long just snapped off the roof.

‘There were around 20 people in the pool when it happened. Everyone who was there was just shocked by what has happened. The whole thing was very traumatic.’

Swimming pools are known as hazardous environments for lighting installations, as the moisture and chemicals present in such environments can have a corrosive effect over time.
